Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area, located in Alexander County, North Carolina, is a 318-acre park rich in history and natural beauty. From 1922 to the early 1940s, granite was quarried here, and remnants of the old quarry can still be seen today. The site also once housed a prison camp and a railroad line that serviced the quarry. Today, the park offers a variety of activities for visitors. There are approximately six miles of hiking trails leading to the mountain’s summit, including the popular "Stairway to Heaven" route. For rock climbing enthusiasts, the park provides climbing routes of varying difficulty on the mountain’s granite slopes. Rocky Face Mountain is known for its unique geological features. It is an example of a granite dome or bornhardt and showcases exfoliation processes in massive granite formations, creating striking rock structures. |
